Will Bunions Go Away on Their Own?

There is no mistaking what a bunion is. It is a common foot deformity that can develop from wearing shoes that are too tight and is noticeable by the small bony protrusion that is seen on the side of the big toe. Bunions that are left untreated may grow and push the other toes toward each other. This can present difficulty in walking and medical attention is often sought for comfort and relief. Research has shown a bunion may also be caused by genetic factors in addition to medical conditions such as various types of arthritis. People who are afflicted with a bunion may need to purchase larger shoes to accommodate it and mild relief may be found when a protective pad is worn over it. Bunions do not go away on their own and it is strongly suggested that a podiatrist be consulted who can prescribe orthotics or recommend surgery for permanent removal.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact Gabe Rodriguez, DPM of Sioux Falls Foot Specialist. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

Research has shown that approximately one third of people who are 65 years old will have some type of foot pain. The feet can become stiff and achy, which may be a result of becoming more sedentary than in past years. A common foot condition is a bunion, which is generally caused by wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. It is characterized by a bony lump that forms on the side of the big toe, and may cause pain while walking. Additionally, a corn can develop for the same reason, and despite its small size, may cause considerable discomfort. The skin on the heels may become dry, and cracked heels is a condition that is common as the aging process occurs. Severe cracks in the skin are called fissures, and may bleed, if not promptly treated. Having an ingrown toenail can wreak havoc in attempting to complete daily activities, as a result of the pain it can cause. This is defined as the nail growing into the skin, instead of over it, and surgery may be necessary for a complete recovery. If you are in this age group and are experiencing any kind of foot conditions, please consult with a podiatrist as quickly as possible who can provide you with effective relief options.

Geriatrics and Podiatry
When people age, some common issues that may occur are bone density loss, dry skin, poor circulation, and rough brittle nails. These issues may also affect your foot health if the necessary steps are not taken to alleviate the problems.

It is important to take care of your feet because feet that are injured or diseased can affect your overall health. Having painful feet hinders your ability to do daily activities or may decrease your willingness to do the things that you need to do.

Visiting Your Geriatrician
As we age, health problems become more likely, so it is essential to visit your doctor for check-ups to ensure that you are doing the best you can to take care of your health. It is recommended to check your feet frequently for any possible cuts, bruises, swelling, corns or any other irregularities.

Taking Care of Elderly Feet
Cracked or dry feet can be treated by applying moisturizer often. It is also important not to wear old socks because the older the sock is, the higher the possibility there will be that there is bacteria there. Wear fresh socks and make sure they fit properly.

Proper foot health means that you can have a more active lifestyle and you will not be bogged down by pain. Foot health also leads to good circulation, which is paramount for overall health.

Freestyle Swimming and Foot Pain

Feet help propel the body forward when swimming. Range of foot motion, flexible ankles, and pointed toes are important for flutter kicks in freestyle swimming. However, muscle cramps can occur while swimming, which can be painful. In fact, the most frequent injury in this activity is from cramping. This can happen from overworking the muscles and from overtraining with weights. Cramping can also occur from dehydration in muscles. Inflammation and tendonitis from repetitive foot and ankle movements and pointing and flexing toes excessively while swimming can also occur. Poor swimming technique can contribute to such pain.  One should drink plenty of water and use drinks fortified with electrolytes as well as relax the muscles for two or three days after training. A warm-up session before swimming can help to avoid cramping and pain on the tops of the feet, as well as improve muscle and joint flexibility. Likewise, stretching the ankles and toes can help prepare for more comfortable swimming. If you are a swimmer and experience foot pain, consult with a podiatrist who can offer you more advice and treatment options.

Sports Related Foot and Ankle Injuries

Foot and ankle injuries are a common occurrence when it comes to athletes of any sport. While many athletes dismiss the initial aches and pains, the truth is that ignoring potential foot and ankle injuries can lead to serious problems. As athletes continue to place pressure and strain the area further, a mild injury can turn into something as serious as a rupture and may lead to a permanent disability. There are many factors that contribute to sports related foot and ankle injuries, which include failure to warm up properly, not providing support or wearing bad footwear. Common injuries and conditions athletes face, including:

  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Plantar Fasciosis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains

Sports related injuries are commonly treated using the RICE method. This includes rest, applying ice to the injured area, compression and elevating the ankle. More serious sprains and injuries may require surgery, which could include arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Rehabilitation and therapy may also be required in order to get any recovering athlete to become fully functional again. Any unusual aches and pains an athlete sustains must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Plantar Warts Can Be Treated!

Plantar warts are small growths that develop on parts of the feet that bear weight. They're typically found on the bottom of the foot. Don't live with plantar warts, and call us today!

There are several reasons why elderly people may encounter foot problems. The fat pads in the feet may become thinner, and the skin may be drier. Severely cracked heels that are known as fissures may develop, and relief can come from using a good moisturizer. Many seniors have poor circulation, which may lead to the inability to feel existing cuts or wounds on the feet. One of the best things elderly people can do for their feet is to wear shoes and socks that fit correctly. Research has shown the feet become wider as the aging process occurs, and larger shoes may need to be purchased. It may be beneficial to lose extra weight which may help to prevent heel spurs and plantar fasciitis from developing. This is helpful in reducing the pressure the heels endure from completing daily activities. It is suggested that elderly people are under the regular care of a podiatrist who can identify potential foot problems, and offer effective prevention and treatment tips.

Proper foot care is something many older adults forget to consider. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles, contact Gabe Rodriguez, DPM from Sioux Falls Foot Specialist. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.
