Common Causes of Swelling in the Feet

Swelling in the feet can result from various factors that affect circulation and fluid balance. Long periods of sitting or standing can lead to fluid buildup due to reduced blood flow, causing discomfort and puffiness. Certain medical conditions, including heart, kidney, or liver disease, can contribute to swelling by affecting the body's ability to regulate fluids. A high salt intake may also cause water retention, leading to noticeable swelling in the lower extremities. Blood clots can obstruct circulation, resulting in one-sided swelling accompanied by pain or redness. Additionally, wearing tight footwear restricts movement and can worsen fluid accumulation. A sedentary lifestyle may also contribute to poor circulation, increasing the risk of swelling. If you notice your feet and ankles are swollen, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can determine what the cause is, and offer appropriate relief and treatment solutions.

Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact Gabe Rodriguez, DPM of Sioux Falls Foot Specialist. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:

  • Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
  • Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
  • Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
  • Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
  • Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.

Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.

Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.

Causes of Ankle Sprains and Prevention Tips

Ankle sprains are a frequent injury that can occur due to various factors. Wearing high heels often causes instability in the foot, making it easier to twist or roll the ankle, especially when walking on uneven surfaces. Rough terrain activities, such as hiking or running on rocky or uneven ground, increase the risk of rolling the ankle and straining ligaments. Uncomfortable landings, particularly in sports or other physical activities, can cause sudden twists or bends in the ankle, leading to sprains. Chronic instability, whether from previous sprains or weak ankle muscles, can make the ankle more prone to reinjury. Weraing more supportive footwear, strengthening the ankle muscles, and being cautious on uneven ground can help prevent sprains. An ankle sprain can cause severe pain and discomfort, causing difficulty in completing daily activities. If you have sustained this type of injury, it is suggested that you promptly seek guidance from a podiatrist who can effectively treat this condition.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact Gabe Rodriguez, DPM from Sioux Falls Foot Specialist. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Causes of Pain on the Side of the Foot

Pain on the side of the foot, known as lateral foot pain, can make simply walking or standing difficult. Causes of lateral foot pain include stress fractures, cuboid syndrome, peroneal tendonitis, arthritis, a twisted ankle, and tarsal coalition. Stress fractures develop from repetitive impact, cuboid syndrome occurs when the cuboid bone is injured or dislocated, and peroneal tendonitis results from inflammation of the tendons along the outer ankle. Arthritis can cause joint pain and stiffness, and a twisted ankle may stretch or tear ligaments. Tarsal coalition, which is a congenital condition, can lead to foot pain and limited mobility. Symptoms include sharp or aching pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight. Depending on the cause, a podiatrist may recommend rest, immobilization, custom orthotics, or in some cases, surgery, to relieve pain and restore foot function. Ignoring persistent foot pain can lead to further complications, so early evaluation is important. If you have pain on the side of your foot, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam, diagnosis, and treatment.

Foot Stretches for Flexibility and Strength

Regular foot stretches help improve flexibility and strength, benefiting overall movement and stability. Stretching the toes, arches, and ankles enhances mobility by increasing the range of motion in the foot and preventing stiffness. Strengthening exercises support the muscles and tendons, reducing the risk of injuries such as sprains and strains. These stretches also contribute to enhanced performance in activities that require balance and coordination, including dance, sports, and daily movement. Proper foot flexibility supports better posture by aligning the lower body and reducing strain on the knees and hips. Gentle stretches, such as toe extensions, arch lifts, and ankle rotations, promote circulation and relieve tension. If you have foot pain, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can treat various foot conditions, and guide you further on effective foot stretches for relief.

Why Stretching Is Important for Your Feet

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Gabe Rodriguez, DPM from Sioux Falls Foot Specialist. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first to determine if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous exercise, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising to ice and rest the foot. It is advised that you then see a podiatrist for help.

Mistakes to Watch for in Treating Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, is a common infection that can cause thickened, discolored, and brittle nails. Mistakes in managing it often worsen the condition. Ignoring early signs like slight discoloration or nail brittleness can allow the infection to spread. Mild treatments might help, but using them inconsistently or stopping too soon often leads to recurrence. Another mistake is attempting to self-treat with home remedies without proper diagnosis, delaying effective care. Wearing tight, non-breathable shoes or walking barefoot in public areas like pools or gyms increases reinfection risks. Poor nail hygiene, such as improper nail trimming or sharing nail tools also contributes to fungal growth. Treating toenail fungus requires patience and consistency. If you have this condition, it is strongly suggested that you see a podiatrist for effective and safe treatment.

For more information about treatment, contact Gabe Rodriguez, DPM of Sioux Falls Foot Specialist. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus is a condition that affects many people and can be especially hard to get rid of. Fortunately, there are several methods to go about treating and avoiding it.

Antifungals & Deterrence

Oral antifungal medicine has been shown to be effective in many cases. It is important to consult with a podiatrist to determine the proper regiment for you, or potentially explore other options.

Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.

Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.
