Maintaining proper foot care in elderly people can help prevent falls and injuries. Enduring a fall can affect the quality of life, and it can be difficult to complete daily activities. The muscle tissue in the feet can become thin as the aging process occurs, which may lead to a loss of feeling in the feet. It is beneficial to check the feet for any sores, cuts, or blisters that have developed, and this can be accomplished by using a mirror. A family member or caregiver may be able to help with this task by examining the soles of the feet. It is wise to wear shoes that fit correctly, which may aid in maintaining balance. Avoiding wearing shoes that are too tight may help to prevent blisters and corns from developing. Additionally, the feet will generally feel better when the toes are wiggled after sitting for long periods of time, and frequently elevating the feet may help to improve circulation. If you would like more information about how to care for elderly feet, it is suggested that you speak to a podiatrist who can provide you with useful tips.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.

Timeline for Children’s Foot Growth

Many parents are interested in knowing how fast their child’s feet grow. It is common for toddlers to have new shoes every few months that can accommodate their growing feet. Research has indicated the feet grow approximately three-quarters of an inch per year during the ages of one and three, and will increase to half an inch between ages three and six. Some parents find it helpful for their child to wear open-toe shoes, such as sandals, which can give the toes adequate room to move freely. It is beneficial that the first pair of shoes is purchased when walking begins outside, which can protect the feet from various surfaces. Until that time, the overall foot can become stronger as the child walks barefoot while indoors. If you would like additional information about when and what type of shoes to purchase for your child, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can help you with the knowledge you are seeking.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact Gabe Rodriguez, DPM of Sioux Falls Foot Specialist. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Common Symptoms of a Broken Toe

The majority of people experience immediate symptoms when they break a toe. There is often bruising, swelling, and it can be difficult to walk. It can happen for various reasons, including a heavy object dropping on it, or if it stubbed into a piece of furniture. Additionally, falling may cause a toe to break, and people who have osteoporosis may be more susceptible to sustaining this type of injury. If the toe is severely broken, a protruding bone from the toe may cause it to look deformed. This type of fracture requires prompt medical attention, and surgery may be necessary to heal and restore the toe to its normal position. A diagnosis generally consists of having an X-ray taken, and this can help to determine the severity of the fracture. Mildly broken toes can be treated by using the buddy taping method. This is done by taping the affected toe to the toe next to it. If you have broken your toe, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can guide you toward the treatment option that is right for you.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Gabe Rodriguez, DPM from Sioux Falls Foot Specialist. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is a Broken Toe?

A broken toe occurs when one or more of the toe bones of the foot are broken after an injury. Injuries such as stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it may cause a toe fracture.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Swelling
  • Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
  • Stiffness
  • Nail Injury

Although the injured toe should be monitored daily, it is especially important to have a podiatrist look at your toe if you have severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms include worsening or new pain that is not relieved with medication, sores, redness, or open wounds near the toe.

People who develop rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, are no strangers to the pain this condition can cause. The symptoms that often accompany this ailment can include stiffness, and the joints throughout the body may be swollen. The feet can be affected by rheumatoid arthritis, and it may be difficult to walk and complete daily activities. RA is considered to be an autoimmune disease, and it attacks the lining of the joints. Some patients can experience fevers, extreme fatigue, and possible weight loss. The components of the feet that are affected can include the cartilage, toe joints, and the joints that connect the foot and the ankle. Patients who are afflicted with RA look for relief, and may find it, by wearing custom-made orthotics, practicing a regular exercise routine, and maintaining a healthy weight. If you have foot pain, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can diagnose and treat rheumatoid arthritis.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact Gabe Rodriguez, DPM of Sioux Falls Foot Specialist. Our doctor will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.
